Invasive Species

Invasive species are non-native species that are introduced into an environment that is not their own causing damage to ecosystems, displacing native wildlife and spreading diseases.

*How does this relate to us sailors?*

"Animals, eggs, larvae and plant fragments are easily transported in or on equipment, shoes, clothing and other damp places and can survive for a long time.

For example, new research from the Environment Agency shows that a killer shrimp can survive in the moist fold of a wader for up to 15 days.”

Thus, it is really important to Check, Clean and Dry all sailing equipment well after each session.

Taking care of the bodies of water we sail on is our duties thus a bit of extra care is what is needed to prevent these invasive species from contaminating foreign bodies of water.
